About

Surgical Oncology

Surgical oncology is a specialized branch of surgery that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of cancer through surgical procedures.

Surgical oncologists are highly trained medical professionals who possess expertise in performing surgeries for cancer with least risk and morbidity.

In the face of a challenging landscape where patients needing major cancer surgeries were being referred to larger cities, the Surgical oncology department of Onco Foundation made its mark in the city. The team embarked on a groundbreaking initiative to make major oncology surgeries available within the city of Erode.

They procured advanced and state of the art surgical machines and equipment’s. This bold step allowed the team to bring confidence among doctors and patient that advanced cancer surgeries could be performed in Erode. To ensure seamless patient care during and after surgery, the team also has a support system of skilled paramedical staffs.

The team developed their own fully equipped, dedicated Surgical Oncology Operation Theatre with all the advanced machineries and instruments right from World class diathermy machine to Latest High definition Minimally invasive Surgery set. They also have sophisticated post operative units and Intensive care units with round the clock intensivists monitoring to manage of high risk cases.

As their efforts took flight, major oncology surgeries in Erode became a reality. Patients no longer needed to travel far from home for complex treatments.

EVOLUTION OF THE DEPARTMENT

THE TEAM REGULARLY PERFORMS THE FOLLOWING SURGICAL PROCEDURES

  • Resection of oral malignancies with neck dissections and reconstructions.
  • Laryngectomy and Laryngopharyngo esophagectomy for cancers in larynx and pharynx.
  • Parotidectomy for parotid tumors.
  • Thyroidectomy for thyroid cancers.

Minimally invasive approach favours reduced surgical morbidity and early recovery of the patients.

  • Esophagectomy for esophageal cancers with 3 field lymphadenectomy.
  • Gastrectomy with D2 nodal dissection for gastric cancers. Small bowel resections for small bowel tumors.
  • Colectomy for colonic cancers.
  • Low anterior resections and Abdominoperineal resections for Rectal cancers.

  • Whipples procedure for periampullary and pancreatic cancers.
  • Hepatectomy for liver cancer and liver metastases.
  • Radical cholecystectomy with lymph node dissection for Gall bladder cancers.

Most of the thoracic procedures are done through minimally invasive approach using VATS (Video assisted thoracoscopic surgery). This ensures early recovery and obviates the chronic pain of open surgeries.

  • Lobectomy with mediastinal lymph node dissection.
  • Pneumonectomy.
  • Segmentectomy or Wedge Resection.
  • Mediastinoscopy.
  • Thymectomy.

  • Mastectomy.
  • Breast conservation procedures.
  • Sentinel lymph node biopsy.
  • Oncoplastic procedures.

Minimally invasive approach using Laparoscopy is the prime choice.

  • Nephrectomy, Partial Nephrectomy for renal tumors.
  • Radical Cystectomy, Transurethral Resection of Bladder.
  • Tumor (TURBT) for urinary bladder malignancies.
  • Radical Prostatectomy for prostate cancers.
  • Adrenalectomy for adrenal tumors.

Performing through minimally invasive approach has huge advantage over open surgeries.

  • Staging surgeries for Endometrial cancers.
  • Staging surgeries for ovarian cancers.
  • Radical Hysterectomy for cervical cancers.
  • Pelvic Exenteration for advanced / recurrent cervical cancers.
  • Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy for selected endometrial cancers.
  • Cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC.

Performing through minimally invasive approach has huge advantage over open surgeries.

  • Wide excision.
  • Reconstructive procedures - pedicled flap and free flap procedures.
  • Limb salvage surgeries with modular prosthesis.

  • Wide excision.
  • Sentinel lymph node biopsy.
  • Reconstructive procedures to cover the resection defect.

UNIQUENESS OF SURGICAL ONCOLOGY DEPARTMENT

The team also bears the reputation for having performed many ultra major surgeries and Minially invasive oncological surgeries for the first time in Erode.

  • Minimally Invasive Cancer Surgeries
  • Cytoreductive Surgery and HIPEC

Minimally Invasive Cancer Surgeries

In recent years, significant advancements in surgical techniques have led to the emergence of minimally invasive procedures for cancer treatment. The team is the first to introduce many of the minimally invasive oncological surgeries in Erode.

Minimally invasive surgeries in the abdomen are also known as laparoscopic or keyhole surgeries, involve smaller incisions compared to traditional open surgeries. Thoracic surgeries are also done using Minimally invasive approach through Video Assisted Throacoscopic Surgeries (VATS)

This approach offers several advantages:
  • Smaller Incisions: Minimally invasive procedures use tiny incisions, resulting in reduced scarring, less pain, and faster healing times for patients.
  • Shorter Hospital Stay: As the surgical trauma is minimized, patients often experience shorter hospital stays, allowing them to resume their daily activities more quickly.
  • Lower Risk of Complications: Minimally invasive surgeries have a lower risk of infection and other postoperative complications, leading to a smoother recovery.
  • Improved Precision: The use of advanced surgical instruments and imaging technologies allows surgeons to perform delicate and precise maneuvers during the procedure.

Cytoreductive Surgery and HIPEC

  • A novel procedure done for recurrent / advanced ovarian and colorectal cancers.
  • Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) is often combined with cytoreductive surgery - involves delivering heated chemotherapy directly into the abdominal cavity, targeting any remaining cancer cells and reducing the risk of recurrence.
  • The team is well trained and has done the maximum number of HIPEC surgeries in this zone.

Surgical oncology remains a critical pillar in comprehensive cancer care approach. The expertise of surgical oncologists, combined with the advancements in minimally invasive techniques, continues to improve treatment outcomes, enhance patient experiences, and contribute to the fight against cancer.
